Texas U.S. Census for 1900) and never used it as an adult. He changed his name to Bert Edward as an adult because he considered "Pearl" a girls name. All of his children called him "Pap". He died at home of diabetes after suffering
terribly for over a year. The 1910 U.S. Census of Maguire, Tillman, Oklahoma shows that "Birt Rains, age 24 and his wife Lizey S. age 20 were married and boarders of Thomas H. McGuire and his wife Linda." The names are obviously misspelled. Grandma Raines (Cynthia Elizabeth Melton) was always known as "Lizzy" by all of her family. In the old days the name "Cynthia" was sometimes spelled as "Synthia" and is probably why the census taker used the initial "S" on the census records that year. Although his gravestone shows that Bert E. Raines was born in 1884, this conflicts with two separate U.S. Census records that show his birth year as 1885. His next oldest brother, Marvin Raines was
born in April of 1884, so it would have been next to impossible for Grandpa to have also been born in 1884. Parents: Jeremiah Oscar RAINES and Emma Francis BARBER.
